Your "Oil Change" Questions - Answered

Count on the Service Center at Tipton Ford in Brownsville for Your Vehicle's Next Oil Change

Following your vehicle's recommended service schedule is essential for keeping it in good working order over the long term. By paying attention to minor maintenance needs - like oil changes, tire rotations and brake pad replacements - you can minimize and maybe even avoid more expensive repairs down the road.

In fact, making sure your Ford's engine oil is changed on a regular basis is one of the cornerstones of smart vehicle maintenance. That's where Tipton Ford comes in: our service technicians are experts at performing regular maintenance services quickly and efficiently, as well as handling bigger repair jobs when the need arises.

Why are Regular Oil Changes Important?

Regular oil changes are especially important because motor oil is the key lubricant for eliminating friction and keeping all your engine parts functioning smoothly. Over time - i.e., a few thousand miles of driving - oil accumulates contaminants and loses viscosity, causing greater friction between your engine's moving parts.

How Often Should I Have My Vehicle's Oil Changed?

The frequency really depends on the model, year and mileage of your vehicle, as well as your driving habits. Older vehicles should typically have an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles, but new cars and trucks may only need an oil change every 7,500-10,000 miles. You should consult your vehicle owner's manual to find out what the manufacturer recommends.

How Do I Change My Oil Myself?

It's a good idea to check your oil every 1,000 miles. Follow these simple steps to check your oil in just a few minutes.

  1. Make sure your vehicle's engine is cool (wait at least 10 minutes after driving)
  2. Pop the hood and find the dipstick for the oil
  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean. (Make sure the fluid you see is brown. If you see red, you're looking at the transmission fluid.)
  4. Replace the dipstick until it snaps into place, then pull it back out
  5. Pull the dipstick back out and check the level of the oil. You want it somewhere between the level indicators
If your oil level is low (below the low-level indicator) add oil and re-check the level until it's between the two indicators.
