With so many states dropping the front license plate requirement, you’re probably wondering, “Do you need a front license plate in Texas?” Even though many of the bordering states don’t require it, you do need a front license plate in Texas. Although there are some exceptions, not following this requirement can lead to fines and misdemeanor charges, so it’s important to know where your vehicle stands.

Does Texas Require a Front License Plate?

Yes, in most cases, Texas law requires your vehicle to carry both a front and a back license plate, mounted securely in a horizontal position. Some vehicles, like motorcycles, are exempt from this rule, but most trucks and passenger vehicles must display a license plate in front. Additionally, all vehicles must place a license plate on the back of the vehicle. 

So why is there confusion about the front plate? First of all, it doesn’t help that 21 states only require the back license plate. However, one of the main causes of confusion was an accidental revision to the Texas Transportation Code. In 2012, the provision that mandated fines for not displaying both plates was dropped by mistake. It was fixed in 2013, but the confusion still lingers. 

There are a number of reasons the front license plate is required, including: 

• Easier vehicle identification: Having plates on both the front and the rear simply makes it easier for law enforcement and security cameras to quickly identify a vehicle. This is especially helpful when officers or cameras only see the front of the car. 
• Public safety: Front plates help police track stolen vehicles, locate suspects, and respond to Amber Alerts more effectively. They’re also useful in hit-and-run cases where witnesses might only see the front of a vehicle. 
• Toll systems: With so many toll roads in Texas, the front license plate is essential. Many Texas toll roads use a camera to scan the front license plate, quickly identifying vehicles and charging toll fares. 

Texas Front License Plate Laws

Under Texas Transportation Code, Section 504.943, most vehicles registered and driven in Texas must display two license plates–one on the front and one on the rear. In order to comply with this law, the plates have to be:

• Securely fastened
• Clearly visible, with no tinted or reflective material covering the plate
• Mounted on the exterior
• Positioned horizontally, at least 12 inches off the ground from the bottom edge

If you’re caught driving without a front plate, you can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor and be issued a fine of up to $200. 

But what if you’ve just purchased your vehicle? Texas law used to allow for paper temporary license plates issued by dealers. However, these were easily forged and allowed a lot of opportunity for fraud. In July of 2025, Texas banned the use of these paper license plates. Instead, dealers must provide metal license plates at the point of sale.

Can You Put It in the Front Window?

Some vehicles, including imports and sports cars, come without a way to mount a front license plate. If you’ve purchased one without a mount, you may be tempted to put the license plate in the front window. However, this is illegal. The front license plate has to be mounted on the outside of the car to comply with the law. The glass of the windshield can distort the license plate, making it hard for law enforcement officers to read the numbers and letters. 

So what do you do if your vehicle doesn’t come with a way to mount the license plate? You have a few options. Some manufacturers offer brackets for purchase so you can mount the license plate. There are also no-drill options, including adhesive, magnetic, and tow hook mounts. Each of these allows you to comply with the law while also protecting your vehicle. 

Exemptions

Do you need a front license plate in Texas? For most vehicles, including passenger vehicles and trucks, the answer is yes. Still, there are exemptions to the rule, including: 

• Motorcycles
• Trailers
• Semi-trailers
• Road tractors
• Antique or classic vehicles
• Some former military vehicles

If you own one of these vehicles, you typically don’t need to mount a license plate on the front. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check before you head out on the road. And remember, even if you don’t need a front license plate, you definitely need to make sure you have a license plate in the rear. 

Fines for Not Displaying It

Texas is serious about enforcing the two-license plate law. If you decide to hit the road without a front license plate, you’re risking some penalties. Law enforcement officers may charge you with a Class C misdemeanor. Plus, you may have to pay a fine of up to $200. Additionally, if you’re a repeat offender or are using material to obscure the license plates, you may be subject to higher penalties.  

In most cases, if you install the front license plate before your court appearance, the courts are willing to drop the charges and fines with a small dismissal fee of $10. 

What If You Lose It?

While in most instances, your license plate will remain in place once mounted, life happens. If your license plate is stolen or lost, getting a replacement is fairly easy. You can go to your local tax assessor’s office and pay a fee of $6.50. You’ll also need to fill out an Application for Replacement License Plate(s) and/or Registration Sticker. They will provide the replacements so you can comply with the law once again.

So, do you need a front license plate in Texas? Unless your vehicle is one of the exceptions (motorcycle, trailer, road tractor, antique, etc.), you must mount a license plate on the front. Failure to do so will result in you being pulled over by police and being charged a fine of up to $200. While it’s possible to get the charges dropped by fixing the issue and affixing the front license plate, it’s better to avoid it by simply following the law.
